Após o capítulo anterior, que focou em melhorias gráficas e de apresentação, desta vez a palavra de ordem é aprimorar a jogabilidade. Desde o nível tático macro até as jogadas individuais, tudo foi revisto para proporcionar uma experiência mais realista.
Trazendo um sistema inovador de derrubadas, que podem ser feitas com até nove jogadores simultaneamente – algo inédito na franquia – e que são geradas em tempo real de acordo com os atributos pessoais de cada um dos envolvidos na jogada, o objetivo é trazer as partidas mais para perto daquilo que é visto nos campos de verdade; e consequentemente para longe daquelas "manhas" que só funcionam nos videogames.
Outras melhorias podem ser vistas no sistema de ataque, que agora apoia os quarterbacks de forma muito mais precisa, criando zonas de conforto para que possam realizar suas jogadas; na diminuição da distância em que um jogador "trava" no outro logo antes de derrubá-lo; e uma melhoria considerável da distância de visualização do campo como um todo, especialmente na hora dos replays.

The Plan é um jogo de tiro em primeira pessoa focado na tática e espionagem. O game conta a história de Robert Taylor, um dos maiores ladrões do mundo, que, após um roubo milionário, foi traído por seu parceiro, Stephen Foster. Agora, Taylor é encarregado de roubar um quadro de muito valor justamente de seu antigo parceiro, Foster, o que torna o trabalho ainda mais interessante.
Para roubar de um especialista, no entanto, é necessário muito mais que experiência. Por conta disso, Taylor conta com um time de primeira, os equipamentos de última geração e um plano muito bem elaborado, é claro.
Ao longo do game, é possível jogar com até sete personagens (até três simultaneamente), realizando as manobras mais sorrateiras de infiltração e utilizando as armas mais eficientes para neutralizar o inimigo.
